Thousands of websites, including government ones in the US and Britain, have been infected for several hours on Sunday with a code that uses the browser to dig in the digital currency, reported the TheLogic site.

More than 4,200 websites were infected with an infected version of Browsealoud, a widely used tool of the British Texthelp software manufacturer.

This software serves to read webpages for people with visual problems written by The Register.

The news comes at a time when cybercrime with software that digs secret cryptographic coins is growing.

These hacking schemes have been increasing in recent months with the growth in the volume of trading bitcoins and other currencies.

The infected version of Browsealoud was digging for Monero coins. Texthelp told The Register that he had stopped operations by disabling Browsealoud while the investigations were started.
