More than 100 child health experts asked social network chief Facebook Mark Zuckerberg to drop the Messenger Kids app for children under the age of 30 by warning about social media risks in children.

In an open letter signed by doctors, educators and experts, they say that children are not yet ready to have an account in social media.

The authors argue that while the social media outcomes are still unknown to young people, encouraging children to use Facebook is even more dangerous.

Facebook launched the Messenger Kids app for December for children under the age of 13. The application had a high level of parental control so that children did not distribute inappropriate material.

Facebook says it has developed the application with the assistance of online security experts and two other organizations, National PTA and Blue Star Families.

Under the social network it is designed for children who want to communicate with their relatives and friends via text, pictures and videos under parental supervision.
